Press releases and features

Stop press!

As a PR professional with nearly 20 years of experience, media and press releases are my bread and butter.

I’ve worked with organisations from a huge range of sectors to deliver successful content to local, national and international media outlets, as well as specialist trade titles.

Press releases and media releases

There is a real art to writing media and press releases. They should not only tell your story and achieve your goals, they should also appeal to the media you are targeting.

You may think that your story is newsworthy, but that doesn’t mean the media will. They are not obligated to cover your story. They have their own agenda and goals and, if yours don’t align with theirs, your story won’t see the light of day.

That’s why you need a PR professional to write your media releases. My job is to find that common ground, do the necessary research and write your story in a way that appeals to the chosen media, securing you with great coverage for your target audience to see.

Luckily, I’ve been doing it so long it’s become second nature to me!

The trick is to write your story exactly as it would appear in your chosen media outlet. For example, a newspaper story will always cover the 5 Ws (who, what, why, where and when) in an opening paragraph, so if you want coverage in a newspaper, you must do the same. And, just like a newspaper, quotes should be used to add extra insight and opinions.

The hallmark of a great press release is that the journalist can just lift it and print it, as it is. Job done well.

Feature writing

I love writing features, whether it’s a complex technical article for my client’s preferred trade title, or a fun opinion piece for a national magazine. I love finding that unique angle and sharing perspectives and opinions. That’s what makes a great feature.

It’s finding the balance between your goals and the media’s goals. When you find it, it’s gold! That’s my job. I will carry out the interviews, conduct the research, find that golden angle and deliver a knock-out feature for your target media.

I have experience writing for many different sectors including hospitality, retail, food and drink, professional services, healthcare, public sector, construction and manufacturing. I’m a strong and experienced technical copywriter too. Ask me to share some of my work with you.
